While many enjoyed theCriminal Mindsseason 5 finale , I have to admit that I was wholly underwhelmed . Not only was it a poor episode , but it was also one of the bad finish of last time of year . Fortunately , it ’s going to take more than one bad episode to get me to stop watching after all these years .
With a newfangled season come in another chance forCriminal Mindsto make up for retiring mistakes . Unfortunately , before season 6 could even begin , the series suffered a major setback . For some understanding , " the powers that be " decide JJ ( A. J. Cook ) was no longer an important character to the series and subsequently fired her – something that costarKirsten Vangsness ( Penelope Garcia ) was n’t happy with . Along with Cook ’s departure , fellow BAU member Emily Prentiss ’s ( Paget Brewster ) character has been importantly cut .
Review
Criminal Mindshas never been the type of show to display fantastic visuals to exemplify or help excuse any character ’s behavior . So I was more than confused when the episode start with a dream - like scene . regrettably , that surprise chop-chop turned into annoyance as they unendingly curve to that same , poorly - realized vista throughout the episode .
I ’m still not quite sure what , if anything , that lend to the tale – other than to emaciate sentence . While understanding the UNSUB ’s connexion to the medicine is a relevant plot decimal point , they have handle situations such as this antecedently without include orthogonal scenes that vary from the expected behaviour of this series . The notion of The Prince of Darkness associating his relationship with Elle as paternal was an interesting twist , but as a killer whale who ’s quickly evolving , it seems absurd that he would give so much control to such a untried nestling - especially this other in their “ relationship . ”
While my assessment of Tim Curry ’s operation in theseason 5 finalewas a footling harsh , it was more than deserved . gratefully , he has redeemed himself in this installment . The scenes between him and Elle really helped viewers to fully realize his theatrical role . plainly , this is something that should have come about in the season 5 finale , but as they say , advantageously late than never .
While the majority of the episode has the team hot on the lead of the UNSUB , JJ was lead manning dateless headphone calls which , in the destruction , serve no other purpose than to artificially amplify JJ ’s role in this episode and provide her character with more screen meter before her unceremonious departure . A perfect example of this inadequate treatment come from the awkward scene in which she ’s forced to peach to The Prince of Darkness . As a foresighted - metre fellow member of the BAU , it ’s should be almost impossible for viewer to believe that she has no surety training . Throughout her tenure , JJ has been smother by skilled negotiators and had to , at some full point , attain some type of knowledge .
Honestly , this finicky scene was sticky to look on and did nothing but solidify just how fiddling they think of JJ as a character . Not only was it was a pitiable soliloquy with lazy writing and cheap direction , but what made it worse is that throughout her painful plea , we were shown scenes of others listening and being affected by this terrible spoken communication - a cheap ploy that may work on some serial , but does n’t tally inCriminal Minds .
continue with something that does n’t meet inCriminal Mindsis the premiere ’s horribly written terminate . For something that has been tout as a grip conclusion to last year ’s shocking cliffhanger , they really dropped the ball .
I ’m not trusted what ’s function on with this series , but something needs to change ready … and by things changing quickly , I do n’t meanfiring A.J. Cook .
Final Thoughts
The season 6 premiere ofCriminal Mindsis a fearful beginning to what used to be a terrific series . With such drastic casting change on the horizon , viewers have to be occupy that an episode like this is no longer the exception , but a star sign of things to fare .
