Black Mirror
monition : This article curb SPOILERS for the Black Mirror instalment " USS Callister : Into Infinity . “As her coming back resulted in a lifetime - changing conclusion for two multitude , Cristin Milioti is breaking down Nanette ’s final decision inBlack Mirrorseason 7’sUSS Callister : Into Infinity . The originalUSS Callisterepisode air in 2017 as part of time of year 4 , earn critical acclaim for its shuddery depiction of digital tyranny set in aStar Trek - enliven scenario . Set in the wake of their rising , USS Callister : Into Infinityfollows Nanetteand the rest of the survive crew , focusing on their existential journeys after escaping Daly ’s ( Jesse Plemons ) rule in the altered version of his game , Infinity .
In a late roundtable interview attended byScreenRant , Milioti explained the garage shot , as it centers on Nanette face Bob , a digital clon of her abuser , Daly , in an attempt to deliver her crew and was give with the option to either copy and glue them into a young waiter , or upload herself into the real Nanette ’s body , for which she chose the latter . Milioti acknowledged thatDaly is a " loose cannon " and " a check metre bomb " , particularly with the powers his digital clone has over the game world :
First of all , I love that you compare it to a bomb because that ’s something that we played with . I suppose what was so exciting about scram to influence on that scene and explore it for the few days that we spent film it was [ thinking about ] in what ways to calibrate how held she has to be .
She ’s gather the person who has ruin her life , but she understands that she ’s dealing with a loose carom ; with a ticking meter bomb , and she has to somehow lenify him while swallowing her own rage . She has to get in and get out , and she has to have him do this matter , and she does n’t sleep together what his powers are . That poppycock is so much fun to research . It ’s just fun to wager with those stakes , and then also the subtext of that .
There are so many parallels to their moral force from the first one in this revisiting of them , but there ’s also some fundamental differences as well . She ’s a dissimilar person now , and I had so much fun explore that . And even that hardening ; that garage was as claustrophobic to shoot in as it looks . It was like a truthful garage that we were trapped in for four days , working on that exceedingly vivid high - stakes scene . It was just really coolheaded . When you read things like that as an actor , you just get so excited to get in there .
I really loved that moment . I suppose Nanette has such a strong moral scope , and yet you completely sympathise that it ’s so manipulative what [ Daly ] does . If you play out the real scenario , if you are watching yourself in a comatoseness , and you are also understanding that you are about to be condemn to being stuck in this thing truly perpetually , you would probably take it . I love that she really struggle with it , and yet does the proper thing .

Although you could argue : is that the right affair ? Should she get out of there and then just cancel them , so that this can end for them too ? I do n’t have it away . It ’s a literal quandary , as he says . I just thought that was a horrible thing to be faced with . And obviously , she does what she thinks is the most compassionate in the moment . But then by way of doing that , she also doom them to this other weird , sh – ty reality of being stick in her head . But that ’s why Charlie is so swell .
What This Means For Black Mirror’s USS Callister Ending
Its Legacy Is Evolving With More Moral Complexity
InUSS Callister : Into Infinity ’s ending , Nanette kills Daly ’s clone during their confrontation in the Heart of Infinity , eliminating his consciousness from the digital kingdom and seizing control of the berth that once rendered her powerless . This act of rising and liberation echoes the themes of the originalUSS Callisterand fight them further , as instead of play a trick on or escaping Daly once again , she actively end the cycles/second of maltreatment . This pivotal moment highlight Nanette ’s firm determination to protect herself and her crew , but also sic a drab case in point for the show ’s depiction of AI ethical code and simulated realness .
While Nanette ’s action save her crew , the entire game collapse after Nanette kills Robert and ultimately traps the crew in a pouch cosmos that cease up existing in her head , raising question about whether she ’s creating a new honorable gray surface area or just doing what was necessary . Black Mirrorhas always thrive on equivocal endings , but this one is especially impactful as it prove that survival in a virtual hell might ask tangible - human race ruthlessness .
Some Black Mirror episodes ended with much more narrative leave to tell , and here are some that are much begging for a follow - up .

Cristin Milioti ’s return as Nanette is one of the strongest expression ofInto Infinity , as she delivers a quietly furious yet deeply compassionate performance , preserve the viewer on edge even when no open villain is in sight .
