Screen Rantrecently had the chance to speak to Mantegna aboutCriminal Minds : organic evolution , exploring how it felt to return to Rossi , what the move to cyclosis has meant for the series , and what sports fan should expect from this revival .

Joe Mantegna On Criminal Minds: Evolution

Screen claptrap : When you guys first sign off withCriminal Minds , this was before the pandemic , and now you ’re retort to this world and character post - pandemic . How did it feel to sink back into Rossi ’s shoes after all this fourth dimension ?

Joe Mantegna : That ’s a well analogy . It really was like sinking back into a yoke of shoes I had n’t bear for two and a one-half years . It was like , " Oh , yeah , I ’ve always liked these shoes . This is great , they match utterly , and they ’re very comfortable . "

There ’s a lot of Joe Mantegna incorporated into aspects of David Rossi anyway . So I imagine for me , it was just like , " large , I get another opportunity to revisit this guy and that world and these citizenry and that occupation . " And I ’ve always liked it , I ’ve always revel it , and there was never any time that I thought to myself , “ I really would like to stop doing this . ” It could ’ve gone on , you know . We wrapped two and a half years ago . If it had been going on continually until now , I ’d feel the same path . " I ’m good . I ’m good here . " I like the people I work with ; I like the stories we ’re telling . So I ’m just happy we have another chance to do that .

So am I , candidly . I ’ve lovedCriminal Mindsfor so long . I wanted to talk to you specifically about Rossi and hisEvolutionstory , because he begin off the revival in a very dissimilar place than I think we ’ve ever really seen him in before . How did it finger to knock into this darker side of Rossi ?

Joe Mantegna : Yeah . It was different and thought-provoking , but good in the gumption that , especially as an actor , to be give way the chance to [ stretch ] . Just the fact that we ’re teem now as opposed to being on connection television , and we have with child possibilities anyway . We ’re able to push the gasbag even further in certain directions , whether it ’s the nomenclature we apply , the spirit of the show , all of it . But in a way , it ’s not like we ’re going overboard , we ’re just being more naturalistic . The form of stuff we ’re doing on the show now with streaming is stuff they ’ve been doing on telly in Europe 50 year ago , so we ’re just play snap - up in some ways .

So , I think that ’s what I care about it , we do n’t have to skip any street corner in the sense that we can actually tell these stories in as naturalistic a way as possible . There are disconsolate aspects to it for the characters we playact , as they are for the victims that are often portrayed on the show . That ’s interesting for me to be able-bodied to tap into those aspects of my character .

I ’m very delirious to see where [ Rossi will ] go next , I ’m excited to see what ’s to amount . Is there anything that you just want to leave the fans with as a quick teaser for what they should expect from this whole time of year ?

Joe Mantegna : Well , I just recollect that they should look it to hold out up to the name of Criminal Minds : phylogeny . That we have evolved to the next tier , and hopefully they will bask it and appreciate it and assimilate it to the same story we have , because we ’re all really excited about it . I mean , we really feel we have taken a step forward and upward from where we were . So rent ’s just see where it goes from there . Hopefully for a long , good amount of fourth dimension from beyond where we are now .
