Prey
Despite one of the tightest , most logically consistent scripts in the franchise , Preybreaks one importantPredatorrule in one of its most important scenes . Preymight be the bestPredatormovie since the original . Like the 1987 sci - fi / horror / action classic , Dan Trachtenberg ’s full-strength - to - Hulu soft reboot succeeds by sticking to the bedrock : a lean story in a natural mount , dilemmas requiring originative problem - solving , definitive creature effect on anew Predator discrepancy , serious-minded setups and payoffs , and bond to internal system of logic . In the last family , though , the movie makes one life-sustaining trip , and it happens to come during one of the moving picture ’s most polar second .
Set in the early 1700s , Preypits the Predator random variable against a teenage Comanche named Naru ( Amber Midthunder ) , the other members of her village , a serial of animals , and a dance orchestra of French Canadian pelt trappers in the Northern Great Plains of North America . Naru want to prove she can trace , but her patriarchal clan wants her to stay home to prepare and clean-living . As the stakes ramp up , though , Naru ’s motivations turn more existential , and the impinge dangers - from the Predator , the trappers , and the wild - begin to bring out her as a fully fleshed character with both strengths and weaknesses . Thefur trapper in thePreymovieare the first dangers to fully come together in on her - enamor Naru and her brother , Taabe ( Dakota Beavers ) to use them to bait the Predator . After their architectural plan flunk , and the extraterrestrial massacres their company ( and Taabe ) , Naru turns the tables on the surviving trapper by knock him out and using him as lure . It ’s a polar moment designed for maximum katharsis , but an example of lapsed logic almost deflower the effect .

In the climactic scene between Naru and the lead fur trapper , Preybreaks one of its own establishedPredatorrules by making Naru ’s heating system - masked consistency invisible rather than just less visible . Prey’sorange floweris institute sooner in the movie to slow hemorrhage by lowering body temperature , which can camouflage the user from the Predator ’s heat - base visual sensation system . It can also arse around it into remember the exploiter is deadened , as it did for one wounded trapper who , after Naru administer it for his haemorrhage , played absolutely by lying still and unknowingly had the depressed body temperature to correspond . In the Predator ’s POV shooter , his body is blue instead of the usual red - orangeness , but it ’s nonetheless visible . Yet in Predator POVs , Naru ’s heat - masked body is completely invisible despite stand ( and go ) flop in front of the Predator .
Why the Predator Killed the Fur Trapper
After the Predator finds the lead trapper , whom Naru has set as bait by amputating his pegleg and yield him an unloaded gun , the Predator kill him without vacillation , which ab initio seems like another possible military issue . As establish by therules ofPredatorbattlesand by Naru ’s own words to begin with in the film , “ It does n’t want bait . It does n’t hunt like that . ” On closer screening , however , this ostensive error is actually a cleverly designed bogus - out . The trapper , whose leg are obscure by a log and whose unloaded gun is n’t obviously unloaded , does n’t look like bait ; he looks like he ’s laying down to take aim at the Predator .
The subversive activity is just one of thePreymovie ’s many ingenious plot of ground gimmick , which include recall to earlierPredatormovies , hook - and - switch , and potent setups and proceeds . In light of all this thoughtfulness , its fumbling of the heat - cover concept is all the more blinding , but it ’s also all the more forgivable . While it may by and by be excuse by a potentialPrey 2or otherwise down the franchise line of merchandise , the fact this seemingly outrightPredatorrule break leads to one of the best sequence in the entire motion picture ultimately makes up for it .
