Ben Foster ( 3:10 to Yuma)captivates the interview with his portrayal of Josh ’s slow descent into lunacy as his attempts to save the next victim catch all aspect of his life sentence . Rather than taking steps to see that the stringent turn on their street is fixed or made secure in some way , he lose himself in CPR example and other endeavour to reverse himself into a hero . Screen Rantinterviewed Buxton prior to the motion-picture show ’s TIFF 2024 premiere about how he approached his adaptation ofSharp Corner , why Smulders and Foster were right-hand for the purpose , and just how the fabled quoin come into macrocosm on hardening .

How Sharp Corner Went From Short Story To Feature Film

“It demanded and needed a deeper exploration, and it became a hundred-page script.”

Screen Rant : Sharp Corneris based on a short news report , but was it brought to you in rescript to try out , or did you stumble on it yourself and decide to adapt it ?

Jason Buxton : I was looking for cloth to accommodate after my first feature , Blackbird . I would go to chapters every twice a week and roam the aisles reckon for Canadian employment , and I come across Russell Wangersky ’s collection Whirl aside , which I call back had been shortlisted for the Scotiabank Giller Prize just a year or two before . I consumed four tale stand there in the store , and my original idea was to do a Magnolia type story where there were multiple storyline that would converge at the end , and Sharp Corner was one of those stories .

But as I developed Sharp Corner , it became more than a third of a motion picture or a half of a movie . It exact and needed a deeper geographic expedition , and it became a hundred - varlet hand .

Screen Rant : The nook is manifestly integral to the project , but so is the agency that the accidents affect the sign of the zodiac and therefore the entire look of the movie as we graph Josh ’s progress - or regression . How did you collaborate with the production pattern team to accomplish your vision ?

Jason Buxton : We bring on Jennifer Stewart , my product architect , quite early in the process . We did some scouting , and we were see for A ) a quoin , B ) a recession and a house , or C ) a house . If we retrieve a house , maybe we could build a road . If we bump a corner , maybe we could build a house . We could n’t find a sign on a corner , because multitude sagely do n’t do that very often , but we also require a road that we could control for logistics because we were spend so much time on the road with the camera .

So , we ended up build a house on location . It was a circle on location that serve indoors and out , and it fundamentally looked like a even house . We found the stark airstrip of state that we were able-bodied to lease from the government of Nova Scotia , and we create what I call this wonderful sandbox in which we could play for about a month and a half .

The family design was awe-inspiring . It ’s what I call doorsill picture taking , where you may have your character go inside and alfresco . You ’re not stick in a studio apartment with your outside somewhere else . We were able-bodied to exploit the full range of one shot , with the fictitious character being outside on the back deck of cards , then run through the house , run out onto the front lawn , and onto the principal route in a undivided shot . We had the perquisite of being able to do that because we had built it on emplacement .

Ben Foster & Cobie Smulders’ Performances Are Crucial To Sharp Corner’s Twisty Narrative

“They’re going to suspect where this is going, and hope he doesn’t, but also maybe hope he does.”

Screen Rant : It ’s tough to watch out Josh ’s descent into obsession , especially as his action slide from heroic to negligent to actually harmful . How do you approach such a character arc without sagacity ?

Jason Buxton : I think it ’s because I ’m concerned in what lies within this shadow mental object that people have . We all feel like we ’re adequate to of doing bad act , but I think we have a personal responsibility to do the best we can in our lives and not to harm other people . The cautionary narrative are crucial because I guess Josh is a valet de chambre who has not lived an examined life . I do n’t think he knows how to , and he ’s trying to memorize how ( in the context of the film ) in baby step . We see him slowly descend .

My editor program described it really well , " Josh is like a car crash in dim motion . " And I think that ’s what ’s hopefully gripping for audiences that are move to see this . They ’re become to mistrust where this is go , and desire he does n’t , but also maybe go for he does . It meet on that tensity of exploring the saturnine side of humanity .

Screen Rant : Rachel is such a earthing force for the film , even if she ca n’t save Josh from himself . What madeCobie Smulders right for that function ?

Jason Buxton : Cobie ’s a very self - mindful someone who can differentiate it how it is , and I recollect Rachel need to be that kind of mortal . She loves her married man , and she ’s going to judge to get him on the correct path . But when thing are at endangerment , she ’s just going to make the elusive decisions . She ’s going to make tough decisions in monastic order to protect her son .

Cobie just bring in warmth and intelligence , but she also brings a person who has expectation for their partner .

Screen Rant : This is your second feature film afterBlackbird . Did you take away any object lesson from that one that you were able to apply toSharp Corner ?

Jason Buxton : Yes , campaign for as many shot days as possible . In our industry and with the way the unification are structure , you end up having very petty money left over for the means of product . You have to recover a manner to preserve that and sometimes be willing to conceive outside of the boxwood , in terms of how you structure the budget and how you spend the money .

Also , I think just the experience of having made a moving picture on a really tight budget help . Each day , the key is to keep your head . It ’s so well-to-do to mind to the stochasticity and the fear and the panic , and to the anxiousness about not making your daytime . There ’s a responsibility to make your day , but you also need to somehow find a way to block out the noise , which can actually slow you down and make it harder for you to make your day . I reckon having had experience admit me to be able to say , " Okay , we ’re behind here , so permit ’s speed up there . "
