Zach Gilford On Criminal Minds: Evolution
Screen Rant : countenance ’s dive right in . Your character , Elias Voit , is a pretty twisted guy , let ’s just say . I imagine that require a colored headspace . Did you have any sort of appendage on set for how you get into fiber ?
Zach Gilford : No , I do n’t really work that path so much . I kind of just incline to do what ’s on the page . And you love , when you go into these scenes , and you ’re doing these things , you kind of just get - it ’s just blue . You ’re just there already . I like the overture , I like this grapheme , and I sense like they publish him in a way where I could do this . None of this poppycock unnerve him . He might as well be mowing the Gunter Grass . And that ’s so much scarier to me , that these evil things are just like , “ Oh , just trimming my nail , doing my matter . ”
In the first two episode , I was genuinely chilled . I do n’t want to give away spoilers but there was a moment where I was like , “ Oh , he ’s go to be someone to be afraid of . ” And so , how much of his backstory did you build up in your top dog versus what might be on the page ?
Zach Gilford : as luck would have it , I did n’t have to build up a lot . The writers kind of already knew who I was and where they were gon na go , and they were able to tell me that . Everything from his origin fib , which we get a little , which we get to go into , and who he is in the normal world when he ’s not being a serial killer . ‘ get all these UnSubs are the great unwashed in the humankind , and we have n’t really been able to go home with them before . They tell me who he was when he ’s not being this guy , and so I was able to fold all that into what we ’re doing as we go along . And it ’s been fun , but yeah , definitely dark .
For sure . As you point out , we do n’t always get to go home with these guys . Now it ’s a whole new format for the show to follow one someone over the whole time of year . How ’d it palpate for you to get together this established show as a villain they have n’t even done before , like a whole brand - new format ?
Zach Gilford : It actually took a small of the pressure off . It allowed me to take a slight bit of ownership over it . And that ’s what they told me when I came in . They were like , “ Look , we ’re so emotional to be rebooting the show and we ’re frantic to be doing it because we love the show , we bang the characters , but now it ’s fresher . We get a dissimilar way . ” And that give the writer a lot of freedom , I think it ’s also given the other actors a lot of freedom because there ’s less of that procedural , we need to strike this decimal point , that point , and that point . It ’s more like , we ’re gon na get there , but in a much slower way . So yeah , it allow for me to kinda say , okay cool , I get to take ownership of this , I ’m walking into an established machine , but they need to do it a small unlike , and they asked me to be a part of recreate it .
Were you a fan of the show before you joined ? Like had you seen any preceding season ?
Zach Gilford : I have n’t seen like seasons and seasons , but I ’ve checked in with it over the twelvemonth . I love it . It ’s one of those things where , if it ’s on , I always get caught up in the episode . And it ’s different than the other ones that have been on for so long . It ’s more grand .
